Ecuador Equator to Banos 2023

We headed towards Quito, Ecuador when we left Colombia.  Saw this billboard along the road and had to take a photo.

The scenery in Equador with snow-capped Andes mountains in the background.  This was our view one evening as we parked along an unused airstrip.
The Middle of the World the sign says.  We're at the monument for the Equator.
A huge stone monument marks the Equator here in Ecuador.  Walkways radiate out in each of the four cardinal directions.
Karen with one foot in each hemisphere, straddling the Equator.
Kissing across the hemispheres.
A view from the top of the monument.  The view in each direction was different.  Here you see some of the many volcanic peaks in the area.
The giant carved Earth ball on top of the monument.
Guinea pigs here are popular.  They eat them, so if you see 'cuy' on the menu, you'll know....
The floors of the monument are a museum of the cultures of Ecuador.  This was one sculpture on one of the floors, talking about their Carnaval.
We parked here at the highest cable car in the world.  Unfortunately, it was closed down due to an accident the previous month that left some folks stranded for hours, hanging in a cable car in the cold.  The gov't hasn't decided yet whether to reopen it or not, despite the $250 million spent on repairs and refurbishment.  We had the cold place to ourselves for the night of the Blue Moon rising above Quito.
A guard let us in the cable car building to take a picture of this mural that covers an entire wall.
Unusual clouds swooping down the mountains and across the sky.
The waterfall that tumbles down into the town of Banos, Ecuador, our next destination.
